What Does Network News Do Right? Nothing!

Big day here at 42 Inch Television, as I was asked to participate in an online discussion for the New York Times "Room For Debate" blog. Hooray! If you were always curious about my opinions on network news, wonder no longer! Look, an excerpt!
Think of it this way: Word that Diane Sawyer would replace the retiring Charles Gibson on ABC’s “World News,” was already disseminated — and the story already dissected — before it was even mentioned on the nightly programs. (That it was suspiciously absent from Mr. Gibson’s broadcast is a story for another day.) Network news can’t even break stories about themselves and yet we’re supposed to think that they still hold some form of relevance to the populace?

2009 Fall TV Preview: One Worse Than the Other

As my father just said, "One of these shows sounds worse than the other." And he's right! If you were hoping for some exciting new programs to add to your DVR, too bad. The crop of television shows this season look, with few exceptions, to be pretty horrendous.

All this week for the Observer, I've been previewing the fall lineups. Exciting! You can see what I think of CBS, NBC, ABC and Fox by clicking on those corresponding links. And stay tuned for The CW lineup coming Friday!
